SPECIALTY CONFERENCE on

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN OF STRUCTURES

Singapore, 29-30 August 2001

(A post-conference event of the 26th Conference on OUR WORLD IN CONCRETE & STRUCTURES)

ANNOUNCEMENT & INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE

Conference Chairman: Prof F. Mola, Politecnico di Milano, Italy

Introductory remarks and conference aims

Engineering structures have to satisfy prescribed requirements. Conceptual Design has to rationally define the basic procedures to get sound structural arrangements not only safe also economical, aesthetical and good quality.

To reach this goal the engineers can proceed by means of classical engineering concepts using approximate methods of analysis in order to quickly obtain reliable information for dimensioning the structural organism.

Design is quite different from analysis, conceptual design states the main guidelines for deriving reliable design procedures.

Quality is a broader concept with respect to safety. Conceptual Design is related to quality and governs the fundamental character of a structure, predetermining its quality and behaviour.

A correctly designed structure is the result of a conscious process satisfying safety, economy, aesthetic and quality.

Structural engineers have to devote in maximum extent their energy and care conceptual design, assuming it as the basic tool in order to get sound and reliable structures.
The basic aim of the Conference is to gather designers, researchers, contractors and teachers to discuss the basis of Conceptual Design, including the education of young engineers during their studies at the University.

  • Conceptual Design of Tall Buildings
  • Conceptual Design of RC and PC Structures
