Emer. Prof. George Gr. Penelis
He was a professor of R/C structures in the Dept. of Civil Engineering in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.TH.) and in parallel the director of the Lab of R/C structures from 1971 until his emeritus status (2006).
He has coordinated more than 30 research programs, 25 doctoral theses and he has produced in cooperation with his team more than 600 papers, books and scientific editions. His research activities have been focused on Earthquake resistant concrete structures, Structural restoration of monumental buildings and in the use of recycled materials in concrete technology. He has actively participated in the administration of the University (Chairman, Decan, Senator) and in many other posts of the Public Sector (Secretary Gen. of R & D of Greece, Vice Chairman of EGNATIA ODOS S.A., etc.).
He has been involved in the design or the review of many prominent R/C buildings (Museum of Acropolis, Stavros Niarchos Cult. Center, etc.) and in the structural restoration in some of the best-known monuments in Greece and abroad (Rotunda in Thessaloniki, National Library in Athens, Rotunda Saint George in Cairo, Hagia Irene of Istanbul).
For his pioneering work in the structural restoration of Roman and Byzantine monuments, he was honoured as an ordinary member of “Academia Pontaniana” (Napoli, Italy, 1981).
