Brief CV of Ioanna Berbili

Ioanna Berbili completed a B.A in Archaeology in 1995 and an M.A. in Byzantine Archaeology in 2000, both at the University of Ioannina.

During her academic studies, she participated in the excavation at the Byzantine Hermitage (Engkleistra) of Saint Nicolas in the cave of Varasona mountain in Aitoloakarnania, in a research programme for the documentation of Byzantine and post-byzantine monuments of Molyvdoskpepastos in Epirus, and she also worked voluntarily in the excavation of a temple of classical period at Nea Figalia in Ilia Peloponnesus conducted by the 7th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities (1994-1995).

Since October 1999 she holds the position of the curator at the Hellenic Maritime Museum. Among other duties she is heavily involved in the design and delivery of the educational programmes of the museum, and as a curator, with the organization and coordination of temporary exhibitions in Greece and abroad.

She is also the author of several entries for artifacts from Hellenic Maritime Museum collection in exhibition catalogues, editor of printed and digital publications, and a member of the editorial team of the museum’ s magazine “Periplous of Maritime History”.

Since 2004 she is doing secretarial work for the biennial Panhellenic Congress of Hellenic Maritime Museums and since 2014 she holds the position of Secretary in the working group established by the Greek Ministry of Culture & Sports for the protection and preservation of traditional ships and traditional wooden boat building in Greece.
